First-Step Faculty Travel Funds

Thanks to a generous gift from Claudio Haddad, the Brazil Studies Program will welcome proposals to a “First-Step Faculty Travel Fund.” The purpose of the fund is to make timely and flexible grants to support short trips for Harvard faculty for exploratory research trips with a well-defined purpose and plan to visit field sites, schools, or labs, and to meet with Brazilian colleagues.

Who is Eligible?

This fund is aimed at Harvard faculty without prior research experience in Brazil and who do not have fully developed proposals to submit to other campus funding sources such as the DRCLAS Faculty Grants Committee, the Lemann Research Fund, the Cities Research Fund, or the Climate Change Solutions Fund. The applicant must be an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor employed full-time by Harvard University in any Harvard Department or School. The Brazil Studies Program Manager will be responsible for verifying that applicants meet these criteria.

Benefits

The DRCLAS Harvard Brazil Office in São Paulo may be available to help to organize the visits of awardees. We anticipate a maximum award of $5000 per person.

How to Apply?

Applications should consist of a maximum 1000-word proposal outlining the objective of the proposed trip to Brazil; laboratories, field sites, archives, or institutes to be visited; potential collaborators or sponsors with whom the applicant would like to meet; and a budget. The applicant should also send a maximum 5-page CV. If the applicant is proposing to work with a Brazilian scholar, this collaborator should send a very short statement (one paragraph) expressing interest in exploring working together.

Review process: We will accept and review proposals on a rolling basis.  Applicants must submit proposals at least two months before anticipated travel.

Application materials should be sent in a single email to Tiago Genoveze (tiago_genoveze@harvard.edu) with the subject "Application to BSP Funding".
