"MLAB has been a wonderful, life-changing experience that I wouldn't change for anything. It allowed me to personally develop a relationship as a mentor with a mentee. It was amazing to get to know my mentee and understand the struggles he faces with his educational pursuits. It has not only allowed me to understand Brazilian culture a little more fully but it has allowed me to cross lingual and cultural barriers and develop friendships that will last a life-time. MLAB has truly been amazing." David Larkin, Harvard College, Class of 2018.
"MLAB is definitely a remarkable experience. Firstly, the purpose of the program is totally fulfilled. Secondly, this event made me a better person. And thirdly, I made a precious friend. My English language skills are way better. I became able to understand different accents, to different speeds of speech, and to understand what people mean without knowing all the words' meanings. Besides that, I became a confident English speaker, and by that I mean I'm not afraid of speak English because I think I won't be understood. Moreover, could try the best of American culture: the Americans! My personal experience is unpayable. Being in touch with so many inspiring people made me reflect about myself, what made me grow a lot. Apart from that, I made a friend that taught me to be optimist, to look at the situations in a different way from the usual, to be more supportive and altruist. Since MLAB started, I found out more dreams and motivations, and I've always had someone to share with. I made a friend who does what he can and what he can't do to help you." Victor Bartholomeu, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"I'm a whole new person after MLAB. In the beginning, MLAB was just another school program, but after some time, I realized that for me it was about forgetting all the stereotypes that I've ever heard about a country/culture, sharing my life experience, my dreams and who I am for someone new and being privileged to heard Lauren's history, laughing a lot, singing Disney and pop songs; waking up 10 minutes before the breakfast because Lauren and I love to sleep (so it includes take a nap whenever it's possible), having a list of inside jokes, being inspired for all the histories and having a good time with amazing people." Ana Beatriz Andrade, high school student , Colégio Bandeirantes.
"For me, MLAB has been an absolutely incredible opportunity to learn more about Brazil and the rich Brazilian culture that fills our world. Not just the type of culture that you read about, but rather the type in which you make friends in Brazil and travel to visit them and explore the place they call home. I’ve learned so much about everyday life in Brazil, including its government, family structures, other contemporary issues, and Brazilian history throughout the course of the program. At the same time, it’s been really cool sharing my experiences with my mentee Pietro as well as some of the other mentees. Sharing stories from my life and college/high school experiences in the U.S. is something that I know the mentees found to be fascinating and something that I hope will inspire them to be the best they can be. Overall, I think the program just goes to show that all of us, no matter what nationality, are connected by our common identity: the human culture. We know this because of the tightly-knit bonds we managed to form in such a short amount of time virtually through Skype, and then in person when we went to São Paulo. Here’s to all of the bellyaching laughs, the inside jokes, the Brazilian winks, and the incredible times in Brazil and through our Skype sessions. I’m thankful for MLAB and for my acceptance into the program because it allowed me to meet some pretty amazing people both in Brazil and at Harvard, friendships that I know won’t end when MLAB does, but that will carry on well beyond the end of this school year." Jeff Cott, Harvard College, Class of 2018.
"MLAB was definitely an amazing and unforgettable experience. I loved to meet so many awesome people and to learn so much, not only about school subjects but also about cultures, customs and ways of life different from mine. Moreover, my English has improved extraordinarily. The funniest part of the program was definitely the immersion, when we all met in person and got together for a lot of time. Furthermore, it was very good to talk to someone who understands what it takes to get to a place like Harvard because I had no idea how to apply for a university in the U.S., how to get a scholarship and how the whole process is like." Pietro Palma, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"MLAB was extremely impactful in my life. It was much more than the magical experience I thought it would be when I applied. Besides the enrichment of my English language skills, American culture and the life at Harvard, I could get to know inspiring people, who shared with me the most interesting things. The academic and personal benefits are uncountable. In addition to it, having the opportunity to live a one-on- one experience with my mentor made it look closer to a dream, once we’ve built an amazing lifelong friendship while exchanging experiences. During the immersion, I decided to leave any shyness aside and fully experience that exciting environment, in which I could learn lots of things, from funny expressions to new ways of thinking about social issues. At this stage of the program, the mentors and mentees looked like old best friends. Being among friends gave me confidence and it turned out I became more outgoing, virtue I will strive to keep along my way as I will never forget on single moment of this unique achievement." Beatriz Cordeiro, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"MLAB was an incredible experience for me, both as a mentor and as a student of Portuguese. I saw my mentee Isa grow from the bundle of nervous energy she was in her our first video chat to the deliberate, curious learner she has since proved herself to be. I am honored to have participated in this key year of her high school experience, as she was gaining confidence with her language skills and formulating her plans for college. I am also glad that through this opportunity I was able to practice my Portuguese and to share my knowledge of English with others. I have been fortunate to have a great education in languages, and believe that English could be an incredible tool and source of enjoyment for those who learn it, just as Spanish and Portuguese are for me. This experience has been unforgettable, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it." Jessica Tueller, Harvard College, Class of 2018.
"I believe all kinds of kind gestures deserve gratitude and MLAB is this kind of gesture. More than an academic opportunity, it gave us the chance to see the american culture from another perspective; before the program, US was just a lot of stereotypes , but now we can see that americans are more than just these ideas we had, they live just like us, they have the same problems and sometimes they have the same way to solve them. They feel the same feelings we feel. Our mentors inspired us to think about the world around but also about the world inside us and this world is bigger than we have imagined. When becoming friends we became conscious of ourselves." Isabella Paulino, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"'Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.' Mahatma Gandhi. The way I see it, this quote can definitely define what MLAB meant to me. Since MLAB’s beginning, I learned new things, that not only changed the way I face my daily routine, but also the way I understand life. Aside from explaining to me how is it like to study in Harvard, my mentor, Julio Cabrera, has been an inspiration to me and has always motivated me to keep engaged in making the world a better place. The best part of the program was definitely the January immersion. Having known people from all over the world, I was able to discover new cultures, listen to all kinds of stories and share plenty of experience. Furthermore, the program made me realize that studying abroad is not as difficult as it seems. All in all, MLAB was essential to my personal growth and to expand my horizons." Diego Zancaneli, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"How do I describe my feelings in words? How do I describe the most important experience of my life? MLAB is more than learning about studying outside Brazil. It's about friends, it’s about learning about other cultures, it’s about knowing who you really are, it’s about never giving up on your dreams, it’s about enjoying every single moment of your life and making the people who are around you feel great. I look back and feel strong while looking ahead, because this program changes lives - it changed my life. Thank you for every single thing!" Paloma Maranhão, high school student , Colégio Ari de Sá.
"MLAB is an incredible mentoring program that manages to inspire both the mentors and the mentees. From the very first Skype session in October to the amazing immersion in January, it was an eye-opening experience, from which I wouldn`t change a thing. The weekly virtual mentorship sessions were immensely interesting and helpful, since it was during them that my mentor, Beth, carefully explained to me how U.S. universities` application process works, gave me some great tips and told me more about her life at Harvard. They were also very funny, as it was through the skype sessions that Beth and I started bonding and became good friends. Our week together in São Paulo, however, was undoubtedly my favorite part of the program, since I was able to not only finally meet my mentor in person and spend lots of time with such an amazing friend, but also get to know the other MLAB participants. It was great learn more about other cultures, practice my English speaking and meet generous and brilliant mentors from culturally diverse backgrounds, who were so kind to us mentees and inspired us to keep working hard for our dreams. Surprisingly, I feel like the immersion even changed the way I think of Brazil. Seeing my mentor so in love with São Paulo, its colorful streets and, especially, its food, I started to fully appreciate Brazil`s beauty, which those who, like me, have been born and raised here, many times fail to perceive. And while not as exciting and fun as the other parts of the program, even the application process was very beneficial to the mentees, as it was one of our first experiences with writing essays and going to interviews. To conclude, I would recommend MLAB to anyone, since it`s a great way to meet amazing people, gain some perspective and, hopefully, grow as a person. I feel extremely lucky for having participated in this program, thanks to which I gained not only more confidence on my social and speaking skills and knowledge of U.S. universities, but also wonderful friends who I love and can definitely rely on for personal or academic advice and support." Barbara Nakamuta, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"I believe that a rich person is the one that can contemplate the small moments that actually have great value. I feel rich, because the program Mlab allowed me those moments. My English improvement was really good. Speaking, writing and listening skills. I think there's still more to improve, and I feel safe to say that Mlab made me realize exactly what;. And also, This project made me grow, professionaly and personaly. Besides all technical part of the program, it is such amazing how much everybody can learn with each other and realize that even if we are from different countries, traditions, families we are all the same. All of us wake up every morning to reach our goals, to be happy, to be the person we have been dreaming since we were a child. Be part of this program have motivated myself to do my best in everything." Yasmin Vieira, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"MLAB was one of the best experiences in my life. From the conferences to the english immersion, the program showed me new cultures, people and a new way to see the world.I made friends, learned with them, and had fun at each of the activities and places that we visited. The most import aspect for me in the program was the exposure to new experiences from the mentors, both in and out of Harvard. These are the reasons why MLAB truly impacted me." Paulo Lima, high school student, Colégio Bandeirantes.
"MLAB brought a lot of knowledge to my life, and I'm not talking about developing my spoken english. It allowed me to know how a mentor/mentee relationship works, and how I could earn a lot of experience with it. I also have the chance to knowing more about other cultures and life styles. Certainly this program was a turning point in my life, because it has shown to me that we can never give up of our dreams and that we have to always look to know more." Bruno Mainhart, high school student, Colégio Ari de Sá.
"As a mentor, you learn more than you expect to from your mentee. You grow as they grow. You get to know their passions and dreams that can even inspire you. MLAB is an incredible program that creates relationships lasting longer than the program and that become a lifelong resource." Yesenia Jimenez, Harvard College, Class of 2017.
"MLAB has been an incredibly transformative experience. The first day I met Bárbara over Skype, I was amazed by her zest for life, intelligence, and unparalleled motivation to succeed. We hit it off and enjoyed weekly Skype sessions. Our relationship strengthened greatly when I came to São Paulo, and I left in tears thinking about how much she had grown and how much I would miss her. After MLAB, I longed to return to Brazil. Because of that, I applied to several summer programs throughout Brazil. This summer I'll be back in São Paulo as an intern for ÁPICE Brasil. Not only will I be able to return to Brazil in a professional environment, but I'll also have the opportunity to spend more time with Bárbara and watch her continue to pursue her dreams. Thank you, MLAB!" Beth Morin, Harvard College, Class of 2019.
